How to Write a Perfect Conclusion in IELTS Task 2

Conclusion is a very important part for an IELTS Task 2 essay. This is also the easiest part of the essay. All you need is just review the discussion above in the essay. Do it in brief, only 2 or 3 sentences are okay.

There are some important points that you must remember when you write a conclusion paragraph:

  1. Never write any new idea in a conclusion paragraph

  2. Try to avoid the same vocabulary that you've already used in the essay

  3. Must include a sentence that clearly answers the question

  4. You have to write a conclusion, at least one sentence, two or three is better.

Let's explain these points in detail:

1. Never write any new idea in a conclusion paragraph

Conclusion paragraph is just for wrapping up your discussion in a formal way. Never bring any new idea in this paragraph. If you write any new idea here, it will not remain a conclusion paragraph anymore. Because, a conclusion paragraph has to give a concluding statement which is completely based on the essay.

2. Avoid the same vocabulary that you've used

Try to use synonyms or paraphrases in the conclusion rather than repeating the vocabulary that you've already used in the essay. For example, you can write 'crucial' rather than 'important'. Likewise, the word globalization can be replaced by the word advanced global integration, and so on.

Make sure the paraphrases or synonyms are not changing the meanings of the original sentences. Because, the same word can provide a completely different meaning in a different context.

By the way, you can check our strategies for applying paraphrases and synonymsIt will give you a clear idea how to construct a completely new sentence without changing the meaning of the original sentence.

3. Must include a sentence that answers the question

Just adding a sentence in the name of a conclusion paragraph is never enough. The examiner will not be convinced merely watching your couple of extra sentences. Rather, he/she will read what you have written in the conclusion. Therefore, you must write the concluding sentences in a way that they can clearly give a brief answer.

In fact, we have mentioned many times at this website that introduction and conclusion are the two impression giving paragraphs. An introduction will give the idea what you are going to write, and a conclusion will tell the examiner what you've written.

4. You have to write a conclusion, you cannot skip

Writing a conclusion is a part of coherence and cohesion. You know the importance of coherence and cohesion for your essay. It carries 25% of total essay marks. Therefore, you must write a conclusion paragraph. If you don't have enough time to write 2-3 sentences, write at least one sentence, but still you have to write.

We are going to use the following example question to construct a conclusion paragraph:

Example Question

"Reading books keeps a person’s mind active, whereas watching films and television is passive and does not require people to use their imagination.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?"

Constructing a Conclusion Paragraph

It's time to construct step by step how to write a band 9 conclusion paragraph. Let's apply our special strategy for forming the paragraph addressing the question stated above.

Previously, addressing the same question stated above, we discussed on the two major points in the body paragraphs. Those two points were simply the two topic sentences for the two body paragraphs in the essay. We're restating below those two topic sentences because you will need them to draw the conclusion paragraph. (In fact, your conclusion must be based on the body paragraphs. That's why, if you haven't already, we strongly suggest you check back our magic strategy for IELTS Task 2 body paragraphs.)

The two topic sentences were:

  1. Reading is the best mode of nurturing the power of imagination.

  2. Reading a book leads us through real knowledge and vicarious experience.

(The first statement was the topic sentence in the body paragraph 1, and the second statement was the topic sentence in the body paragraph 2.)

Let's apply our magic structure for the conclusion paragraph:

Sentence 1: Summarize the key discussion points

Sentence 2: Give a concluding remark

Sentence 1 (Summarize the key discussion points )

"To sum up, reading stimulates brain activity and results in imagination which eventually helps in real life in term of generating creative output, whereas watching TV or film can simply pass an ephemeral feeling."

Sentence 2 (Give a concluding remark)

"Therefore, I firmly believe that reading offers us an incredible brain culture, which is impossible to gain in the other way around."

The Complete Conclusion

"To sum up, reading stimulates brain activity and results in imagination which eventually helps in real life in term of generating creative output, whereas watching TV or film can simply pass an ephemeral feeling. Therefore, I firmly believe that reading offers us an incredible brain culture, which is impossible to gain in the other way around."
