IELTS Task 2 Band 9 Sample Essay (1)

Air pollution poses a significant global challenge that demands efficient mitigation strategies. While proponents advocate for the effectiveness of car-free days in reducing pollution, opponents argue for the implementation of more comprehensive measures. This essay critically examines both viewpoints to highlight the importance of integrating diverse strategies to combat air pollution and proposes that a combination of car-free days, sustainable transportation, renewable energy transitions, and green urban planning will yield the most effective results.

Car-free days undeniably contribute to reducing air pollution. Statistics indicate that an average car emits approximately 123g of carbon dioxide per kilometer. By restricting vehicle circulation for even a single day, a significant reduction in CO2 emissions can be achieved. For instance, Jakarta, Indonesia, has successfully implemented a weekly car-free day, resulting in improved air quality. These initiatives encourage individuals to explore alternative modes of transportation, such as cycling, walking, or using public transport, thereby reducing reliance on private vehicles and decreasing pollutant emissions.

However, it is crucial to acknowledge that car-free days alone cannot fully address the complex issue of air pollution. Fossil fuel extraction, combustion, and deforestation make substantial contributions to air pollution, accounting for at least 50% of the problem. Therefore, a comprehensive strategy should encompass reducing reliance on fossil fuels, transitioning to sustainable energy sources, and implementing stricter regulations on deforestation. For example, countries investing in renewable energy infrastructure have experienced significant reductions in air pollution levels, simultaneously addressing climate change concerns. Moreover, adopting sustainable urban planning practices, such as promoting green spaces and optimizing transportation networks, can further contribute to mitigating air pollution.

In conclusion, addressing air pollution requires a multi-faceted approach that combines the benefits of car-free days with broader strategies. Governments should prioritize the integration of various measures, including sustainable transportation, renewable energy transitions, and green urban planning, to achieve a substantial and sustainable reduction in air pollution levels.

IELTS Task 2 Band 9 Sample Essay (2)

The international discourse on sustainable practices continually returns to the crux of "car-free days" and their efficacy in curbing air pollution. Supporters posit that instituting days without vehicles dramatically attenuates air pollution, whereas dissenters argue for alternative, and purportedly superior, methods. This essay believes that while car-free days provide a demonstrable immediate impact on reducing air pollution, they should be viewed as a component of a broader, more holistic approach to environmental conservation, rather than a standalone solution.

The proposition that "car-free days are effective ways to reduce air pollution" enjoys a considerable degree of support. It is anchored on the fact that automobiles, particularly those running on fossil fuels, are significant contributors to air pollution. According to the World Health Organization, around 91% of the world's population lives in places where air quality levels exceed their guidelines, with vehicular emissions being a primary factor. By designating certain days as car-free, cities can drastically cut down on carbon emissions. Examples such as Bogotá, Colombia, where a weekly car-free day was implemented, show a significant reduction in air pollution levels, underlining the potency of this approach.

Conversely, a contrary school of thought emphasises the potential of other measures that could yield even greater results. One such alternative is the adoption of renewable energy for transportation. Electric cars, powered by wind, solar, or hydroelectric energy, have the potential to eliminate the carbon footprint of vehicles altogether. More than merely reducing air pollution, this could also stimulate economic growth by creating jobs in the renewable energy sector. Furthermore, critics of car-free days argue that they merely shift the burden of pollution to other days, resulting in no net decrease in emissions.

In my opinion, while car-free days can indeed be a potent tool in the fight against air pollution, they should be complemented with other measures for a more holistic solution. Promoting public transportation and cycling, as well as investing in renewable energy and green infrastructure, will provide a more long-term and sustainable solution. Car-free days are a step in the right direction, but they are not a panacea; they should form part of a comprehensive suite of strategies.

In conclusion, while car-free days can provide a tangible immediate impact, the adoption of renewable energy sources and sustainable transportation infrastructure can offer more long-term benefits.
