IELTS Task 2 Band 9 Sample Essay

Nowadays, the skill of handwriting is considered to be unnecessary for the young pupils in schools. However, though the alternative digital equipment can auto generate an efficient machine writing spending minimal time, in my opinion, the benefits of handwriting obviously outweigh the associated drawbacks as it is a crucial life skill that promotes children's development with creative learning.

It is argued that it is a waste of time if students are required to learn and improve their handwriting skills. The primary reason is that handwriting skills have become less useful, since digital equipment, such as computers and smartphones, has been widely applied to generate various documents and fill forms, which replaces traditional handwriting whenever it is available. Moreover, developing handwriting skills indeed requires a large amount of time which can be spent on learning other essential skills that students should acquire. After all, fewer students will grow up to be calligraphers, while, for most children, knowing how to write is enough for practical use.

However, the drawbacks of handwriting are insignificant compared to the associated benefits, as it improves children's fine motor and learning development. For young children, learning to use pencils requires multiple abilities such as the controlling of hundreds of small muscles and hand-eye coordination, it gives them an incredible muscle memory training. Also, handwriting could facilitate learning because when children are beginning to learn literacy, writing letters down provides opportunities for them to slow down and have more time to digest each alphabet and word, which help them to have deeper memory of the words. Studies show that when people are using pens and pencils, they become more creative and also tend to come up with more ideas.

In conclusion, even though typing with computers or mobile phones seems more popular right now, I believe that it is more beneficial for children if they can spend time on strengthening their handwriting skill as it comes up with developing their muscle memory and creativity.
