IELTS Task 2 Band 9 Sample Essay

There is a debate whether people at the age of 65 and older should be forced to quit or allowed to continue working as long as they want. Though the compulsory retirement age would allow younger generations to start a career more easily, as many would need to leave the professional market every year, having a job is not just working, rather it is a way to keep up our mental health which I personally agree.

With the growing tendency of older people’s not to prefer retiring, younger generations are facing difficulties in finding jobs, because a large number of professional positions are occupied by the age group of 65 and above. Due to this, some people say that as they have the option to retire, they are just taking an opportunity from a younger professional. For instance, the company that I work for had a woman who was 68 years old until she retired last year. In order to fill her position, someone 20 years younger was hired. In short, the people who affirm that having a limit age to work have a fair argument that is often confirmed to be true. Although they do not consider the impacts of the lack of work.

Despite having the option to not work anymore, many experienced professionals are so used to have a routine that they cannot adapt to something new. This brutal change can impact their mental health as they have too much spare time without knowing or having what to do with it. As an example, my grandmother retired when she was 70 years old, but she had to resume her career after just one year as she often felt lonely and bored. That is why, many people cannot accept a new life after decades of a constant routine and dense social interaction with other co-workers.

To conclude, it is understandable that some people defend the compulsory retirement due to its benefits for the professional market. But I strongly believe that people should never be forced to do something that may be mentally harmful for them.
