IELTS Task 2 Band 9 Sample Essay

In the modern society, many citizens prefer to live in a metropolitan city than rural area. While some assert that merits of living in a big city overwhelm the demerits, others argue that urban life have more disadvantages than that of small city. Though life in a major city offers a good communication network and diverse culture, in my opinion, it is more of disadvantageous because the city benefits come at the expense of affordable utility services.

City life comes up with a wide variety of infrastructure facilities. For example, a decent alternative to driving your own vehicle and navigating the traffic and parking issues in big cities is the public transit system. You can go where you need to go via trains, subways, buses, taxis, and ride-sharing vehicles in cities. You may avoid the inconvenience of driving by using one of the many public transit choices, such the bus or train. In the majority of big cities, it is easy to get by without a car. Furthermore, large metropolis filled with millions of residents from varied origins and experiences, adding the city life incredibly joyous and reassuring. For instance, if you frequent the same spots and engage in the same pursuits, you will rapidly meet new individuals who share your interests and likely moved there for similar reasons to your own.

On the other hand, it is also true that the living cost is sky-high in big cities. Due to the high population density, major cities always have a higher cost of living than that of the nearby suburbs. That is why, when people consider relocating to a city, the increased cost of living is usually the first drawback they consider. For example, cities like San Francisco and New York offer the most advanced facilities, but at the same time, these cities require the extremely higher living costs than that of the other areas in the world. Also, big cities incur some additional costs like parking permits and laundry that you would not have in the suburbs. Major cities also have unusually higher prices for fuel, alcohol, food, and cigarette and other daily needs.

To summarize, despite the many infrastructures and facilities are available in a big city allowing people to deal with their tasks easily, the benefits are beyond the reach of the majority because of the high cost of living. As a result, I am still of the opinion that the urban life has more disadvantages than merits because the convenience and quality of life ultimately depend on affordability.
