The lack of comprehensive, long-term studies on the safety of GM foods means that we cannot be certain of their impact on human health. Secondly, the environmental impact of GM crops is profoundly concerning. Genetically modified crops often require heavy use of chemical herbicides and pesticides, which can lead to soil degradation and water contamination, harming ecosystems. For example, the widespread use of glyphosate, a common herbicide used with GM crops, has been linked to declines in biodiversity, particularly among beneficial insects like bees and butterflies that are crucial for pollination. Furthermore, the proliferation of GM crops can lead to the development of “superweeds” and “superbugs” that are resistant to conventional agricultural chemicals, necessitating the use of even more toxic substances and creating a vicious cycle of chemical dependency.


In conclusion, GM foods are not a suitable solution to the global food crisis due to their potential health risks and environmental damage. Focusing on sustainable agricultural practices and improving food distribution systems would be a more effective and safer approach to addressing the challenge of feeding the growing global population.

GM crops engineered for herbicide resistance allow farmers to use more environmentally friendly weed control methods, minimizing the ecological footprint of agriculture. This not only benefits the environment but also reduces the exposure of farmworkers and consumers to potentially harmful chemicals, promoting a healthier ecosystem and population.
