Nowadays, an increasing number of people are willing to help poor people, but how they can donate appropriately is a tricky question. While considering the required expertise and convenience, many resort to charities to hand in their donations, I believe it would be better to directly support the local community, as it can be a quicker and more transparent approach.
Procedural convenience is the most important reason why donors choose charities for the donations because it saves their plenty of time by simply just filling in a few forms and handing in their money. In addition, professional charities are more experienced and well-organized because these kinds of activities have been significantly developed and improved. For example, every year charities handle millions of US dollars from a large range of donors for various situations, such as charities for earthquakes or pandemic diseases. Therefore, they are more likely to have a reliable management system to handle complex tasks.
However, in terms of transparency question, supporting poor people directly over private charities is preferred by many philanthropists. In other words, the donors are often worried if their money will be used properly and wisely because the allocation of funds usually is an unpublished process within charities. By contrast, if people can purchase some goods and deliver them to poor people directly, the concern of transparency can be completely avoided. Another problem is that the work efficiency of charities is usually quite low due to the fact that they have to deal with a number of management issues, such as endless meetings to discuss and plan expenses, whereas assistance can be provided much faster in a neighbourhood circumstance.
In conclusion, although both methods have numerous benefits, I would encourage donors to directly support the people who need them, because in need of an emergency issue, a fair and faster response is important regardless the level of competence.
